Setting up a session, and why the strategy name matters more than it looks.

Strategy name
Everything you do is filed under this name — sessions, trades, statistics, and the drawings and indicators on your chart.
Use the same name every time you test the same idea. That is what lets the Analytics page tell you that London Breakout makes money while Gold scalp quietly loses it.
If you type a name you have used before, you will see this:

That is not an error. It is telling you the new session will join the existing strategy, and that Continue will from then on pick up this newest session. Nothing you did before is deleted.
Market
123 markets are available: 68 currency pairs, 18 stock indices, 24 metals, plus oil, natural gas, agricultural products and government bonds.
There are no individual company shares and no crypto.
Start date
How far back you can go depends on the market:
Market | History from |
|---|---|
Major currency pairs | 2005 |
Gold and most metals | Late 2008 |
Indices, energy, bonds | Varies — the date picker will not let you choose a date with no data |
Pick dates you have not studied. If you already remember what the market did that week, you are testing your memory rather than your strategy.
Starting balance
Use a realistic number — ideally the size of the account you actually trade, or the one you are working towards. The minimum is $100.
Testing a $5,000 strategy on a $100,000 balance tells you nothing useful about your position sizing.
Chart layout
Choose between one and four charts. You can change this mid-session, so start with one until you are comfortable. See Using more than one chart.
