Two ways to print candles, and when each one is right.
You choose how candles appear when you set up the session. Both options replay identical history — the difference is how much of the candle’s life you get to watch.
Bar by bar
Each step prints one finished candle. Fast and clean, and the right choice for reviewing a lot of history quickly.
The trade-off: you never see a candle forming. Price jumps from one close to the next, so you do not experience the pullback that would have shaken you out in real life.
Tick by tick
Each step advances one minute, and the current candle grows in front of you — the wick extends, the body fills, the colour flips. Your profit and loss moves the whole time, and stops and targets are checked minute by minute inside the bar rather than only at the close.
This is far closer to how trading actually feels. It is also slower, which is the point.
Use tick by tick when you are testing whether you can hold a trade. Most people discover their real problem is not entries — it is that they cannot sit through a drawdown they can see moving.
Which to use
Use bar by bar when | Use tick by tick when |
|---|---|
Covering months of history | Testing a specific trade idea |
Checking whether a setup exists at all | Practising holding through noise |
You want speed | You want realism |
You pick this on the setup screen. Charts on a one-minute timeframe or shorter already move tick-sized, so the setting makes no difference to them.
